The Grind
TG_37WA
The Grind is a meditation on labor, persistence, and the mechanics of progress—both literal and abstract. Salvaged from renovation debris, the dumbwaiter’s heavy gears and worn pulleys are reimagined as a kinetic sculpture, merging restored components with newly fabricated elements. CNC-milled plywood softens the industrial heft of cast iron, while suspended belts and chains stretch upward, connecting past function to present expression. As the crank turns, the gears engage in a slow, deliberate rhythm, embodying the relentless yet meditative nature of work. Positioned within the communal artist studio, the sculpture becomes both a focal point and an interactive experience, inviting artists to engage with its movement. Its quiet, rhythmic motion transforms the space into one of reflection, reinforcing the idea that progress—whether in art, labor, or life—is built through steady, intentional effort.
